Started in 2001, the Dot NAME generic extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to register john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased third-level domains remained online.
